An online degree is worthwhile if it is earned in the online program of a reputable university. Start with your state university. If you live in one of the thirteen western states (except California) or in Indiana, consider Western Governors University, which offers in-state tuition to residents of these states. If none of these programs work for you, the University of Maryland and the University of Illinois have the largest online programs of any state university, although you will have to pay out of state tuition if you do not reside in the state of the university.

Stay away from the expensive and often worthless programs which are offered by for-profit proprietary schools, many of which advertise heavily and admit almost anyone who applies and can pay the fees or is willing to sign for a loan of them.

As long as the college (online or campus based) is regionally accredited, any degree you earn should be accepted by any potential employers or other academic institutions.
My best recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges to find the best fit for you and your needs (tuition, schedule, career opportunities, etc.). Too often people enroll in the first school they find rather than taking the time to find the best school for them. Taking that time now could save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you choose the wrong school.
