An associates degree is something you have studied as your major. You have studied History as a major and you can get an associates in History after so many credits.
A minor is something that you have studied along with your major. Your major was History, but you have minored in Spanish.
You can’t have a minor without a major.

Let me give you a specific example…Associate in Hotel and Restaurant Management is programmed for two years in contrast with BS Hotel and Restaurant Management that is four years.

In the college of Education, you enroll a Bachelor in Secondary Education major or minor a specific subject, like, Mathematics, etc.

I think there is no such thing as a minor degree. It is more appropriate to tell that a degree is an associate degree.

Therefore, associate degrees are just preparatory degrees. Minors are specializations in a bachelor’s degree that are studied in a lower level (lesser subject) compared to majors as specializations.

A minor is like a secondary set of studies that is usally related to your major. For example, I majored in Journalism with a minor in Communications Studies (which involved radio and TV).

When I got my AA form a community college, it was totally unrelated (business).

Adding a strong minor to your major will make you more valuable to a company since you have a wider base of knowledge.

In college, one can get a degree in business, history, whatever. The MAJOR would be business, history, whatever. One can also have a minor, say in music or art. So, you get an associate’s degree (2-year) in business (major) and a minor in music. Say a major requires 20 semester hours (sorry, I am not that familiar with associate degrees) and a minor 10 semester hours. So, you take 20 hours of business and 10 hours of music.
Hope this helps.
